Once upon a time in Java, there was a poor old woman who lived alone in a shack near the forest. People called her Mbok Sri.

Not far from where she lived there were a king and his wife, recently blessed with a son. But it turned out that the prince had long been preyed on by an evil green giant.

One night, the green giant kidnapped the baby prince from the castle, “This baby looks tender and tasty, too bad that he is so small”, he thought.  The green giant then came to Mbok Sri and asked her to raise the baby boy. “Feed and raise the baby and when he’s big enough I’ll come to take him”. Out of fear, Mbok Sri agreed.

Years passed by and the prince grew into a strong and handsome young boy named Jaka. He was raised and taught with love by Mbok Sri. Though she looked happy, Mbok Sri had a secret she kept from Jaka. She could never forget the night she was visited by the green giant.

One day, Mbok Sri decided to tell Jaka the whole story. Jaka was surprised but not frightened. He went to the castle to ask the king for help. Realizing that Jaka was their long lost son the king agreed to help cast out the giant.

The green voracious giant appeared at Mbok Sri’s shack. He was surprised to find it empty. Wrathfully, he walked towards the castle destroying everything in his way. However, he didn’t know that Jaka and the King’s troops were ready to send him away.

The green giant was confronted by Jaka’s troops. Outnumbered, he tried to flee.  But Jaka didn’t want to let the dangerous giant run away. Jaka and the king’s troops chased the giant and forced him onto the edge of a cliff. Having a big heart, Jaka offered the giant a chance to surrender in peace as long as he promised not to harm people anymore.

Feeling insulted, the green giant flew into a rage and attacked the troops. Jaka decided to strike back at the giant and whacked him with a mighty blow. The giant fell off the cliff into the abyss and never returned.

Filled with triumph, the whole kingdom cheered for their long lost prince. From that moment on, Jaka lived happily in the castle as a prince together with his parents and Mbok Sri.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Facing modernity, folklores have become less appealing. Although the stories convey great moral and cultural values, people nowadays prefer another form of entertainment. This storybook was created as a reaction towards an existing problem that encounters many cultures.
