The Tiger Girl Girls who born in tiger year are believed to be arrogant and fierce in Chinese mythology. They are called as one who brings disaster to the household because of their "tigress" personality. Thus in the early 20th century, a lot of parents abandoned Chinese baby girls because the year that they were born in. Peonies here mean beautiful girl. Indeed those girls are beautiful, strong and had grown up well in CHIJMES.

The Disabled Girl She is blind, trying to imagine her surroundings. The background is inspired by the stain-glass in the chapel. The clothing is inspired by baju kurung and kebaya with floral pattern. The two potted-plants on top is “coconut blossom”. It is a flower that Malay use in important event. The blossom itself means welcome. This disabled girl hope nothing much but to be accepted and welcome by her parents. She was once abandoned by people but was welcome because of Gate of Hope

The Poor Girls Girls that were abandoned because their family could not afford to raise them. Grapes and wheat are they symbols of "food" which tells that they are fed well in CHIJMES although their family could not afford to do so. The clothing is called "choli", an Indian traditional dress.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project is based on CHIJMES’ “ Gate of Hope”, a small door located at the side of the building. This project will tell how this small door has actually brought hope to hundreds of girls back in the early 20th century in Singapore.

In this project, people are being invited to visualize CHIJMES by looking different elements of this great historical building as well as remembering the “ Gate of Hope” that had once existed. To see more details (sketch, concept, thoughts, illustrations), please visit the link below:
